A network of 13 Great Walks is being established in NSW national parks as part of a plan to transform the state into a bushwalking "mecca".

The walks cover more than 630 kilometres, from the coast to the summits and rainforests.
The state government said the Great Walks Strategy will provide durable walking tracks, protect environmentally sensitive areas, safeguard against severe weather and provide infrastructure to meet population growth.
Launching the program, NSW environment minister James Griffin said the walks are intended not just for hardcore hikers. Many styles of walk and accommodation are provided at nearly 900 national parks and reserves, he said.

He said visiting national parks is one of the top three things visitors do when travelling to a rural or regional destination, and more than 90 per cent of people in NSW are interested in walking in national parks.
NSW national parks welcomed more than 60 million visitors annually before the pandemic, and visitation levels are growing.

Dorrigo Escarpment Great Walk: Dorrigo National Park, North Coast, 46 km; 4 days/3 nights.
Great Southern Walk: Royal National Park, Kamay Botany National Park and Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area (Greater Sydney and South Coast); 67 km; 5 days/4 nights.
Light to Light Walk: Beowa National Park (South Coast); 34 km; 3 days/2 nights.
Murramarang South Coast Walk: Murramarang National Park (South Coast); 34 km; 3 days/2 nights.
Snowies Alpine Walk: Kosciuszko National Park (Snowy Mountains); 55 km; 4 days/3 nights.
Tomaree Coastal Walk: Tomaree National Park (Hunter Valley); 20 km; 2 days/1 night.
Tweed Byron Hinterland Walk: Mount Jerusalem National Park and Nightcap National Park (North Coast); 36 km; 4 days/3 nights.
Wollemi Great Walk: Wollemi National Park and Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area (Blue Mountains and Central West); 90 km (approx); 5 days/4 nights.
