Leading sexual health doctors talk erectile dysfunction in new article

Sexual health experts Michael Lowy and Dr Vijayasarathi Ramanathan say if a person is experiencing erectile problems regularly, it may be time to reach out for help.

The duo address erectile dysfunction in a new article in Australian Prescriber, discussing common causes, what can be done about it, and what people who may suffer from it need to keep in mind.

Dr Lowy said there were many causes for erection problems, including heart disease, diabetes, drug and alcohol use, and prescribed medicines.

He added that worrying about the problem could often make it worse.

"Your doctor can help find the cause and work out what your choices are. Sexual counselling can also help," Dr Lowy said.

"In many cases your doctor may prescribe a medicine."

Dr Lowy said a class of medicines called phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors were often helpful when it came to treating erectile problems.

Before starting one of these medications, he said it was important for a patient to tell their doctor about any other medications they were taking to prevent harmful drug interactions.

"Also tell your doctor about other substances you might take sometimes," he said.

"For example, amyl nitrate (also called poppers) can react badly with medicines for erection problems. Your blood pressure may drop suddenly and you could collapse."

Dr Lowy said while some of the medications were to be taken one-two hours before sex, others should be taken daily.

The article also looks at other potential treatment options, such as penile injections, or a penis pump.

"Injections work quickly - within 10-15 minutes. But it is important to inject in the right place," Dr Lowy said.

"If nothing else works, an implant in the penis may help. However, you can't remove an implanted device."

Dr Lowy said it was important to understand the harms and benefits of all the choices.
