A Canberra gin and vodka producer has halted production of all spirits to focus solely on production of hand sanitiser for use by frontline medical staff in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Canberra's most awarded premium spirits brand, Underground Spirits, has dedicated its entire distillery to the production of hand sanitiser with production going around the clock.
Owner and Head Distiller Toby Angstmann, said the sanitiser was going to health carers who need it most including GPs, doctors, nurses, theatre staff, Emergency Services ACT and all health services.
"In the last week we have made and transported out over 5600 litres. It is going to where it is needed most, including to Services Australia across the country," Dr Angstmann said.
Underground Spirits is part of a Canberra collaboration where ACT distillers, winemakers and brewers have banded together respond to the critical short supply of hand sanitiser. Canberra District wineries have been supplying wine which is then distilled and turned into the 70 per cent alcohol sanitiser - turning wine, spirits and beer into potentially life-saving hand sanitiser.
