Reg said six years after Shirley's death, he was in a very lonely place. He realised others might be in a similar position and approached his local newspaper.
Soon after, his group for widows and widowers in the Albury Wodonga area was formed and in March, the group will celebrate its 7th anniversary.
Reg said the group currently had over 20 members and meetings took place regularly on Mondays at Albury's Commercial Club for morning tea, with some staying on for lunch.
He said the group also met on many Fridays - including to celebrate members' birthdays, with each outing's guest of honour getting to choose the venue.
"We don't meet to sympathise with one another, we talk about everything and anything else. We are a very happy group," he said.
"It is such a nice group of people, very friendly."
Reg said the group had no treasury and members paid their own way, with the only exchange of money being $2 each per week towards a group lottery ticket.
He said romance had also blossomed within the group, with three couples forming.
"I was looking for a rich widow myself, but I think I'm a bit old for that now," he joked.
