AN ONLINE platform working to reduce social isolation among older people is looking for Queenslanders who want to create supportive local communities.
The One Good Street project, which has been operating in Melbourne for two years, aims to build community connections and help neighbours offer practical support to older people and their carers.
It also includes a Library of Aged Care Things, which shares cleaned and safety-checked aged care equipment. Families can donate pre-loved equipment, which is then tagged, tested and distributed free.
Independent living services provider Bolton Clarke has worked with One Good Street and other service organisations to deliver equipment to more than 50 Melbourne clients since the program started this year.
Now, the platform has launched a national website and is seeking to expand its reach and create "good streets" across Australia.
Creator and RMIT Health Transformation Lab deputy director Matiu Bush said the initiative used social networking to give neighbours the opportunity to offer knowledge, assistance and skills for older people and their carers through a supported platform that includes positive ageing activities and education. A street accreditation process rewards neighbours for taking part.
The concept was developed in response to research and feedback from Bolton Clarke At Home Support teams, who identified the issue of isolation as a significant factor affecting the wellbeing of clients.
"From starting an Air Con Club to help older residents during the heat, to sharing aged care equipment through tool libraries, to casserole clubs that provide nutrition and connection, One Good Street inspires and empowers neighbours to make a real difference in the lives of older people," Matiu said.

It includes a feature allowing older people with similar interests who are feeling isolated to connect with each other. They are encouraged to spend a day or more together, reducing the amount of services they require and giving family carers a break.
"Looking after the adult children of older people as they strive to keep their parents at home for as long as possible is one way we can make a difference," Matiu said.
