THE Stroke Foundation is encouraging members of the community to get active this November in order to raise funds for stroke survivors.
The Stride4Stroke initiative invites people to register and encourages them to set their own activity goals and fundraising targets.
Northern Territory mother Megan Smith will be taking part in the campaign in honour of her 12-year-old daughter Kaylah, who suffered a stroke in January last year.
The 36-year-old mother from Woodroffe in the Northern Territory has set herself the goal of embarking on a 30km bike ride and has set a fundraising target of $1000 through her Walking 4 Kaylah challenge.
"It's not well known that children can have strokes, even I didn't know," she said.
"I thought this could never happen to Kaylah because she was young, fit and healthy."
Megan said in addition to raising funds, she also aimed to raise awareness about paediatric stroke through the initiative.
"Most of us know someone who has been impacted by stroke. I think everyone should get involved and help fight this disease."
Stroke Foundation chief executive Sharon McGowan applauded Megan for participating and encouraged people to join her.
"Stroke is no longer a death sentence for many, but for the stroke survivors and their families living in our community, its impact is far reaching," she said.
Funds raised will go towards a number of programs including the free telephone advice service StrokeLine (1800-787-653) and online support service EnableMe.
