Riding for the Disabled does a lot of good for people with disability, but Linda Janczyk is living proof they aren't the only ones who benefit.
The 72-year-old started volunteering with the charity in 2017, shortly after retiring and completing treatment for breast cancer.
"I've always liked animals and always loved horses, but I'd never had the opportunity to be around them or work with them earlier in life," she said.
She said volunteering for the charity has made a huge difference to both her mental and physical health - replacing health concerns with new skills, motivation and friendships.
Linda initially started volunteering with the Baldivis branch of the charity, but during the COVID pandemic she switched to the Harvey chapter, an hour's drive to the south.
She said she was inspired by the resilience, perseverance and strength of the small band of volunteers in the rural town.
"It's much nicer driving down there. It's my day to myself and it's my happy place there. Something I look forward to."
The Harvey chapter is currently looking for volunteers, and Linda said the group wasn't just looking for people who wanted to be around horses.
It is also looking for cleaners, farm hands, handymen or women, clerical workers, fundraising staff, volunteer coordinators and committee members.
For those wanting to work as horse handlers, full training will be provided.
In addition to volunteering as a horse handler, Linda also currently fills a number of other roles, including serving on the committee and applying for grants. She also recently helped to paint the centre in club colours.
Linda said it was also extremely rewarding to see people with disability benefiting from spending time with the horses.
"They don't necessarily have to ride. Some will just interact with the horses, give them a brush or a groom. It's just horse therapy in general."
"Being able to participate in such an organisation, it makes a difference in so many lives.
"It's mainly for the disabled, but does make a difference with so many volunteers and gives horses a job where they are needed."
