Seniors are being transported back to simpler times to learn the ancient art of blacksmithing and making their own chef's knives.

They're loving the one-day course at Artisan Estate, a working farm and maker's destination in Somersby on the Central Coast, NSW.
Co-owner Madeline Stratford said the workshops are perfect for beginners and experienced blacksmiths alike.
There are a variety of courses to suit different interests, with the recently launched Make your Own Chef Knife workshops proving popular.
All workshops are taught by Chris, an experienced blacksmith who is passionate about sharing his knowledge.
All materials and equipment are provided.
"You will have a blast learning this ancient art and creating your own unique works of art," Madeline said.
At these workshops, participants don't just watch - they actively engage in the process, learning from an experienced blacksmith and create something truly special to take home.
They learn how to make their own carbon steel chef knife from scratch. In this hands-on course, they pick up all the basics of blacksmithing, from forging, to heat treating and grinding.
"We have had a lot of seniors really excited to be (albeit for just a day) transported back to a simpler time, where they can be inspired to ignite their inner artisan, and forge their own creations from scratch using age-old techniques," Madeline said.
She said seniors often had experience from years past and interesting stories about their fathers and grandfathers who were in the blacksmithing trade.
"It's great to see that spark when they get a chance to re-invigorate the craft for themselves."
Madeline said the workshops stand out because they are an authentic experience using traditional methods and tools, providing a genuine connection to the history and artistry of blacksmithing.
"We offer workshops for all skill levels, from complete beginners to experienced hobbyists. Active seniors over 70-plus have attended and completed our workshops," she said.
Artisan Estate is on a nine-hectare pecan orchard.
Oh, and if you're nuts about pecans, then Artisan Estate takes part in the annual Central Coast Harvest Festival, hosting Pick your Own Pecans in June.
"We have a lot of senior visitors come to pick pecans and enjoy a free day out in the orchard," Madeline said.
