Based at the Victor Harbor and Goolwa libraries, the hubs provide information, encouragement and support for older South Australians living on the southern Fleurieu Peninsula.
Offering a space for people to come and discover new activities and relationships, the COTA SA Hub volunteers provide visitors with information and support to connect them with a range of activities, join various groups, and participate in events that are of interest to them.
The Fleurieu is home to one of the oldest populations in South Australia, with about 61 per cent of the Southern Fleurieu's population aged over 50 years, and about 20 per cent of older people living alone.
Fleurieu Neighbourhood Network Hub coordinator Jodie Ward said the hubs are run by local volunteers who provide trusted, independent information, encouragement and support for people aged 50+ and their families."
"We have been working closely with the Victor Harbor and Goolwa libraries to offer the Hubs at a time and place that best suits older people currently visiting the libraries. We also encourage all older people interested in learning more about what's on offer in the region to drop in and see us," she said.
Visitors can drop in during the Hubs opening times. No bookings are necessary.
COTA SA chief executive Miranda Starke said the hubs connect people to the plentiful and active social groups available in the region.
"Research shows that being connected with others is important for physical and mental wellbeing, and our Hubs provide support for older people to enhance their lives and age well through connection with each other," she said.
"Talking with the local community, we identified opportunities to improve support for ageing well in the region. It was clear there was a need for a face-to-face service that provides access to information about the services and activities available in the area."
