The announcement follows a Memorandum of Understanding executed last year between the Tasmanian Government, S.H.E Gynaecological Wellness Group, the University of Tasmania and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
The dedicated wellness centre will provide support to Tasmanians with cancer, and their families and will complement the work that is already being done in cancer treatment and research in Tasmania.
Gynaecological cancers include cancer of the vulva, vagina, cervix, endometrium, uterus, ovaries and placenta.
The most recent data from Cancer Australia shows that gynaecological cancers represent 9.3 per cent of cancers diagnosed in people with female reproductive organs. The most common gynaecological cancer is uterine cancer.
While the survival rate for all gynaecological cancers is around 71 per cent, some gynaecological cancers such as ovarian cancer have a survival rate of only 48 per cent. Ovarian cancer is the sixth most common cause of cancer death among people with female reproductive organs.
"Each week, thousands of Tasmanians receive high quality care and treatment for cancer, and as a Government, we are committed to supporting Tasmanians to access the best possible treatment and care, closer to where they live so that they are surrounded by their families and loved ones," said Health Minister Guy Barnett.
