The team is recruiting NSW residents aged 65 years and older to take part in the study.
Headed by University of Newcastle health researcher Dr Jamie Bryant and UTS law Professor Nola Ries, the team aims to learn more about how people prepare for the future and how advance personal planning can be improved, especially in regional communities.
Professor Ries said people have a right to plan for the future and know their wishes will be known as respected.
"Even when people have done some planning, the documents can often be improved to better protect their legal rights," Professor Ries said.
The study, which is funded by the Australian Research Council, will run for six months.
Participants complete a 20 minute questionnaire at the start of the study and a second questionnaire six months later, with a $20 gift card provided at completion.
Educational resources on advance planning will also be available to participants.
