In a first for Meals on Wheels SA, the state's largest volunteer-based organisation is teaming up with preschoolers to bridge the generation gap.
Meals on Wheels has begun a pilot program at St Margaret's Kindergarten at Woodville to build intergenerational connections.
It comprises a range of playgroup-style activities involving the kindergarten children, their parents and visiting senior adults.
The first session was about forming friendships through portraiture.
The children and seniors painted portraits of each other to be framed and displayed at St Margaret's.
Meals on Wheels SA program coordinator Jane Ryan said the organisation was thrilled to be partnering with St Margaret's for the program.
"This is a new venture for Meals on Wheels but the initial response has been very encouraging," she said.
"Everyone is engaged and learning from each other.
"Meals on Wheels is known first and foremost for our personalised food delivery service and wellbeing checks, however our role is also very much about building strong social connections within communities.
"This trial program is an extension of that, and something we're keen to expand by involving more preschool, primary and secondary children and parents in the future.
"There is strong evidence to suggest that intergenerational programs bring major benefits for young and old alike."
St Margaret's co-director Cathy O'Dea said the program was also a first for the kindergarten.
"This is something we've been looking to introduce for several years, however COVID put those plans on hold until now," Ms O'Dea said.
"It's a wonderful way to bring three generations together, socialise and learn.
"Our playgroup children are all very excited to meet new senior friends and show them around the kindergarten."
