In paw-sibly the wedding of the year, fur-ever friends Wally and Lily have joined in 'mutrimony'.
Wally, aged about 11 years old, is a much-loved rescue dog adopted by Renate Petersen, a resident of Levande Hillsview community in Happy Valley, Adelaide. It was love at first sniff when Lily, a 10-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, moved into the community with her owner Jen Ranger.
After a two-and-a-half year courtship of play dates, long walks and puppuccinos, Wally finally asked for Lily's paw. Wally and Lily's impending pup-tials set tongues wagging in the community.
They made it official in a ceremony surrounded by other four-legged community residents and their paw-rents. The couple exchanged bow wow vows, promising to always share treats and toys.
Wally had a 'ruff' start to life after he was found beaten and starving wandering the streets. He quickly became Renate's best friend when she adopted him, following the death of her husband in 2016.
When Wally met Lily, some called it puppy love but before long it was clear they were the paw-fect match.
"It was Lily who stole his heart. The two have spent countless hours together and always greet each other with a kiss," Renate said.
"We wanted to make their big day special. Wally's nerves were calmed by his best dog Perry, guests woofed down wedding cake, were entertained by a band and there were refreshments for the paw-rents."
The pup-tials was also a fundraiser for the AWL, with guests encouraged to donate.
Manager Darren Ward said Wally's story is heartwarming.
"From his very sad start to life as a neglected and abused stray to now a much-loved pampered pooch. It's beautiful to see how all at Levande Hillsview have made him feel at home," he said.
"While Wally and Lily's wedding is a bit of fun for Levande Hillsview, it is also a celebration of the deep sense of community we foster."
"Our communities feature green spaces and dog parks where pooches can get plenty of exercise. It's also a great way for residents to socialise with others who have dogs. This builds strong connections which are an integral part of our communities."
