The second annual Queensland Seniors Month will once again be celebrating Social Connections and is gearing up to be the ultimate connect fest with more than a thousand events set to be on offer.

Beginning on Saturday 1 October, the United Nations International Day of Older Persons Queensland's Seniors Month will include National Grandparents Day, on 30 October before ending on 31 October 2022.

This year we are proud to announce that the Queensland Government is supporting 108 events and activities, sharing in $100,000.

From dance events in the Lockyer Valley, to Yeppoon's Vive la France Day, the Human Book exchanges where people can 'borrow' an older person to hear their wisdom and life experience, to dinners and dances. Information stalls and expos, to sport days and come and try events - there really is a great variety of low to no-cost events and activities on offer.

Thinking about the activities that connect us, food is generally high up on that list. Thanks to the generous support of The Senior, we are really excited about this year's People Powered Project.

People Powered Project are annual activities held during Seniors Month that I have created over the years which are made possible by Queenslanders participating as a collective. Last year we created The Bigger Picture which is a photomosaic aimed at highlighting the diversity of older Queenslanders.

This year we are wanting to combat social isolation and loneliness by creating Queensland's Largest Sunday Roast to be held on Sunday 16 October.

The Sunday Roast is a long-standing tradition in Australian households. It was the time of the week where family, friends and neighbours would connect over a big meal, preparing for the week ahead.

The Sunday Roast will provide a great opportunity to reconnect with friends and family who may have been isolated due to the COVID pandemic, meet new people, and make new friendships.

Best of all you can host your Sunday Roast any way you like!

You could:

  • share at home with family and friends,
  • enjoy a meal at your local park with your community,
  • or go to a participating restaurant.

The only way for us to know how big our Sunday Roast was is for you to let us know if you'll be hosting a dinner and how many diners you're expecting.

We have created an online form for you to complete. If you need a bit of a hand, please reach out by phoning 07 3316 2999 on weekdays, we are more than happy to help.

You can find out more about Seniors Month, the Sunday Roast, and find events at qldseniorsmonth.org.au

I can't wait to celebrate with you!
