Last week's Antarctic blast brought bumper falls to Mt Hotham alpine resort and in turn, a prompt to open the ski season early.

For the first time since 2000, the resort has been blanketed in record snowfalls in late May and early June, with more mega-dumps landing. A total of 106cm of snow fell last week, and 51cm fell overnight on Sunday, June 5.

Although the Queen's Birthday long weekend traditionally marks the season opening, there is no guarantee of heavy snowfalls. As such, the recent snow has been welcomed.

The one in a 20-year dump is welcome news for Hotham businesses as well as visitors after Covid lockdowns devastated the industry over the past two seasons.
