Up to 3,000 social housing tenants will be able to receive a new washing machine from only $150 thanks to a NSW Government pilot program supporting low-income residents.
Minister for Lands and Water Kevin Anderson said the initiative will reduce living costs while boosting water and energy efficiency.
"Every drop of water counts. While we're not in drought now, we could be again, and it's never too soon to start saving and being more mindful about our water use," Mr Anderson said.
"This NSW Government initiative will replace old top loader washing machines with new front loaders, which are more water and electricity efficient, and could save an estimated 25,000 litres of water each year per machine.
Planning and Homes Minister Anthony Roberts said the NSW Government was committed to reducing the cost of living for those who need it most.
"Replacement washing machines could slash annual household electricity bills and detergent costs by $220 - $245 on average," Mr Roberts said.
"That's hip-pocket savings that really add up, all while helping communities save precious resources."
Those eligible to apply include tenants living in Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC) and Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO) housing located in one of 43 LGAs across the state.
The program is being run in partnership with The Good Guys.
Successful applicants can choose between four different sized machines, and will pay a corresponding fee of $150, $200 or $250. The fee includes delivery, installation, and removal and recycling of their old appliance.
The pilot is being delivered by the NSW Government in collaboration with Sydney Water and Hunter Water.
Applications close on June 30, or when all appliances are allocated.
