With a shared love of travel, the couple has explored many corners of the globe - from England, Austria and Italy to Slovenia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.
But despite international travel being off the agenda for the foreseeable future, the globetrotting pair has been on a walking tour of Valencia, exploring the Spanish city's many cathedrals and historic sites.
The Malcolms were part of a group of Australian "tourists" invited to experience the sights and sounds of Valencia in real time on a live-streamed walking tour with Intrepid Urban Adventures.
The travel operator has joined with aged care provider Southern Cross Care (SA, NT & Vic) to conduct the virtual tours to participants at the provider's Carmelite community centre in Myrtle Bank.
As they watch, participants can interact with the tour guide and ask questions.
Carmel said she and Peter had never been to Spain but it was on their bucket list.
"We enjoy experiencing other cultures and learning more about the antiquity of building and architecture," she said.
"Experiencing Valencia was something new for us.
"For me, the most interesting part of the Valencia tour was the cathedrals."
No hassles
She said the virtual tour was an opportunity to see places they might not see otherwise.
"It was also lovely to sit down and take it easy for a change."
Peter said the virtual tours take all the hassle out of travelling and are suitable for people with mobility or health challenges.
"When you get older it becomes harder to travel, so even if we could travel, an event like the virtual tour gives you an insight into overseas destinations without having to worry about the hard parts, such as trying to find your way around cities.
"Having the guide available live to answer questions was really useful too.
"Carmel and I have accepted that we won't travel again but virtual tours are a good alternative."
Southern Cross Care has more virtual walking tours planned with Intrepid Urban Adventures including one to the Czech Republic.
