A Perth storage company is launching a Smash Storage unit to help people manage their Covid-19 anger through what is called destruction therapy.
Canning Vale Storage Units is making a dedicated storage unit available for people to safely destroy unwanted items, saying two-thirds (67%) of Australians report feeling angry and frustrated because of the global pandemic.
A survey of its customers also found that half (51%) were storing items they neither needed nor wanted.
Enter, destruction therapy, whose proponents describe it is as a type of psychotherapy in which a participant moderates their angry emotions through physical exertion and expression.
Therapists say that when handled properly, anger can be an effective way to cognitively free yourself from negative emotions. When well-managed it can be a useful, motivating you to make positive change.
But when it is suppressed, it can cause problems, including depression and increased anxiety, skin problems, issues with digestion and even heart attacks. And of course it can lead to arguments and worse.
The company hopes the destruction therapy sessions will help people confront and address their unpleasant emotions in a safe space, safely inject some fun into their lives, and get rid of unwanted things in a healthy and productive way.
Sessions of up to an hour are available seven days a week in a dedicated unit at Canning Vale. Participants must bring their own items ready to be safely destroyed, while full personal protective equipment and a safety briefing will be provided.
An hour-long session costs $75, which includes setting up of items such as furniture, lamps, clothes, jewellery, ornaments, photos, and all destruction equipment including crowbars, sledgehammers, baseball bats and so on.
