Members of the public and organisations have until November 12 to make responses to the submissions made by Counsel Assisting at the final hearing of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.
The Royal Commission will receive responses to the recommendations by Counsel Assisting and any other matters arising at the hearing, including remarks made by Commissioners.
The recommmendations for sweeping changes in the sector came after more than two years of hearing into all aspects of aged care in Australia.
The hearings included harrowing evidence of abuse and neglect from witnesses.
Lawyers assisting the royal commission made 124 recommendations including:
- A new Aged Care Act, independent Aged Care Commission; independent pricing authority; process for setting aged care quality standards; and enforceable provider duty of care
- Minimum staff to resident ratios, minimum qualifications and national registration of care staff
- Demand-driven, not rationed aged care
- End to home care waiting lists; care provided at assessed level within one month of approval and provision of care finders
- A seniors dental benefit scheme
- Improved access to medical, allied health and mental health services, restrictions on the prescription of antipsychotic drugs and on physical and chemical restraint
