The NSW Government is offering the free course to up to 40 existing or potential Crown land managers.
The course will be run by the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Property minister Melinda Pavey said the government was looking for volunteers with a range of skills, interests and expertise.
"Crown reserves are government owned public lands that are at the heart of every community and we are looking for more volunteers to take up board positions to help manage them," Mrs Pavey said.
She said Crown land reserves included showgrounds, parks, sporting fields, racecourses, coastal foreshores, camping grounds, nature reserves and community halls.
The free three-day foundations of directorship program will teach participants about governance skills required to participate in the management of Crown land.
"Volunteering in the management of Crown land is a rewarding experience as you help build resilience in your community by supporting local groups and industries," she said.
The online course will consist of six sessions, covering the topics of governance, finance and strategy and risk.
It will cover all directors' duties and responsibilities and on completion, participants will be able to gain their certificate by completing an assessment task.
Mrs Pavey said there were about 600 volunteer Crown land community boards across the state.
"Board membership is a rewarding experience and we want people who are passionate about working cooperatively as a team to benefit their local community."
