Police say the men broke into the home on Furneaux Grove in Bulleen, a suburb in north-west Melbourne, around 5am on the day before New Year's Eve.
The pair ransacked a number of rooms before entering the master bedroom where an 81-year-old woman was sleeping. They woke the woman and threatened to kill her if she didn't hand over her jewellery and cash.
The woman refused and the offenders escaped, but not before stealing the victim's handbag and purse.
It is alleged the two men then used the woman's credit cards at service stations in Roxborough Park, Coolaroo, Broadmeadows and Campbellfield to buy cigarettes and gift cards.
Police believe that when the men were using the credit cards they were travelling in a silver Mercedes Benz SLK350 or similar.
