AFTER a year long pit stop, the Great Australian Rally is back on track, with the annual event to return in a new venue in 2019.
The popular non profit event raises funds for the Peter McCallum Cancer Foundation and is run by the All British Classics Car Club.
It will take place for the first time in two years at new venue Cruden Farm – the former residence of Elizabeth Murdoch from 10am-4pm on January 20.
The rally did not take place last year after former venue Mornington Racecourse was taken over by new management, but is set to return in its new venue with new sponsor EastLink.
Committee member David Cook said the event – which featured both a rally and static displays, usually attracted around 800-900 cars that were at least 25 years old, with some dating back to the early 1900s.
In addition to the cars, he said the event would also feature live jazz music performed by Melbourne’s Royal Australian Navy band, interactive driving experiences, kids activities, memorabilia, food and coffee outlets and more.
He said while hosting the rally in a a new venue presented some logistical challenges, he was hopeful the change would make for an even better, more family friendly day.
“With the gardens, plenty of walks and a lot more shade there, we think it will be a more pleasant place for the display,” he said.
Entry is $20, with children under 14 years admitted for free.
After expenses have been covered, all proceeds go to the foundation to assist cancer research.
