GURINDJI man Charlie King has been named the 2019 Northern Territory Senior Australian of the Year.
The 67 year-old veteran sports broadcaster and human rights campaigner has become a much loved figure in the Northern Territory and throughout Australia for his contributions to sport and society as a whole.
Charlie became the first Indigenous Australian to commentate at the Olympic Games in 2008.
He has also been a passionate campaigner against domestic violence and initiated zero tolerance campaign No More in 2006 – a widely influential campaign that has established links with over five sporting codes and nearly 100 teams.
Charlie received the Order of Australia medal for his service to broadcast media and the Indigenous community in 2015.
He also won a Northern Territory human-rights award in 2016, using his platform to call for an end to family violence over Christmas.
He has volunteered to sit with children who had no parent or guardian during police interviews for 25 years.
Charlie will represent the Northern Territory at the national Australian of the Year awards on January 25 next year.
