However you like your facial hair, grooming it can be surprisingly tricky to get right (heaven forbid you take too much off the left and have to even up the right).
It’s November, which means moustaches are having a moment to help raise awareness for men’s health.
And in the nick of time, Movember Australia has released a grooming guide to make sure no wayward hair grows out of place.
The organisation’s top grooming tips include:
1. Be prepared. Before your first follicle appears, choose the moustache that will grace your face by browsing the inspirational Movember Mo Style Guide.
2. Be brave. The first few days, even weeks, can be uncomfortable and a little awkward as your facial fuzz grows and your mo takes shape.
3. Ignore the itching. Remind yourself that men have endured worse in the past; you can stand a little face tickle.
4. Shape it. Shape your moustache using proper grooming techniques. A great mo comes down to grooming.
5. Nurture it and keep it clean. Look after your mo, and your mo will look after you.
The killers cutting men’s lives short
Whether your upper-lip caterpillar is big and bushy or subtle stubble, every mo grown for Movember is a hairy ribbon in the fight for men’s health.
Testicular cancer is the second most common cancer in men aged 18-39. The risk of being diagnosed with this disease by age 85 is one in 206 – but the rate has increased over the past 30 years.
For men over 45, there’s a different danger. This year, 17,729 Australian men are estimated to be diagnosed with prostate cancer – and 3500 will die from the disease.
And it’s not just cancer men need to be on the look out for. Mental health issues also take a hefty toll.
Beyondblue averages that one in eight men will experience depression and one in five will experience anxiety at some stage in their lives.
Blokes make up an average six out of every eight suicides every single day in Australia. The number of men who die by suicide in Australia every year is nearly double the national road toll.
That’s why Movember Australia’s work is so vital. The organisation is trying to cut the number of deaths caused by suicide and men’s cancers through early detection and access to treatment.
