A NOMAD hairdresser is making sure the travelling community is clipped, groomed and well trimmed.
Stopping in Katherine for a six-week visit, much longer than most, Mary Rose, welcomes about three grey nomads into her make shift salon attached to the campervan, everyday.
A bright neon sign lets everyone know she’s in operation.
“It all started when I was cutting my husband’s hair one day outside our caravan and about three or four people walked past and asked if I could cut their hair,” Mrs Rose said.
Previously a hairdresser, she had always kept essential equipment on her.
And Mrs Rose and her husband Caesar, have found it a great way to mix into the nomad community.
“Once I’ve cut one person’s hair in the caravan park, word usually gets around and by the end nearly everyone has had a cut,” Mrs Rose said.
“It is just a hobby, but it gives us a chance to interact as well,” Mr Rose said.
“It is a great opportunity to swap stories with others,” he said.
The couple from Melbourne are travelling around Australia with their rare breed of dog Benji, the Dingwawa – “Benji’s grandmother had a fling with a dingo, you see,” Mrs Rose said.
The couple didn’t originally plan to stay in Katherine for so long, but the beautiful weather, the lovely people and the outstanding green grass at the caravan park is what has kept them in town.
They have hit up all of Katherine’s hot spots, and say they would like to see the Nitmiluk one more time, but unforturnalty budgeting won’t allow.
“Travelling is rather expensive up here … fuel prices are higher than Melbourne by far.
“It does somewhat effect us. We have to budget for what we spend.
“We look for the cheaper options and sometimes we spend less money in the community to compensate.
The couple, who are moving onto Alice Springs next, said despite the higher expenses, they get a lot out of the many experiences along their trip.
