AN indigenous tour operator has space on women-only dilly bag tours to Arnhem Land this August.
East Arnhem Land tourism operator Lirrwi Tourism is offering gay'wu or dilly bag tours, which give women the chance to come together with their Yolngu sisters and learn about their culture, history and country.
The gay'wu or dilly bag is a powerful cultural symbol in Arnhem Land, where it was created by Indigenous Yolngu women thousands of years ago using woven pandanus leaves.
The dilly bag has both a practical and a spiritual meaning, as it is used to hold bush foods and medicines and is also used to carry knowledge.
The five-day tour is for women and girls only. Space is available on the tour from August 6-10.
The tour includes a charter flight to remote Yolngu homeland and a visit to Buku Larngguy, the art centre in Yirrkala, home to bark artworks, Larrakitj (ceremonial poles), weavings and jewellery.
Buku Larngguy also has an extraordinary collection of historical material and is regarded as one of the best Aboriginal art centres in Australia.
Price is $2399 per person twin share, including accommodation, meals, transfers and tours.
