When the terrifying Lady Arabella Gresham (Rebecca Front) discovers her darling son Frank (Harry Richardson) has fallen in love with Dr Thorne's penniless niece Mary (Stefanie Martini), she is horrified.
Her husband Sir Frank Gresham Snr (Richard McCabe) has frittered away the family fortune and is only being kept afloat by very favourable loans Doctor Thorne has secured from railway millionaire Sir Roger Scatcherd (Ian McShane).

However, Sir Roger is drinking himself into an early grave and with their financial future uncertain, Lady Arabella believes it is her son's duty to wed into a wealthy marriage to save the family estate.
