TRAIN lovers are on track to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Great Western train line and a special engine is set to give the event added steam.
The Great Train Weekend will take place in Mount Victoria from May 26-27 and there will be a steam strain shuttling passengers back and forth to the event from Lithgow as well as an old rail motor travelling to and from Katoomba.
The steam train will feature a Garratt 6029 engine, the same kind of engine that was used on freight trains on the line during the 1950s and 60s, giving passengers a real taste of what it was like to ride in the early days of the line.
Other attractions will include markets (weather permitting), live music at various venues around town and a child's trolley train ride.
Additional highlights will include a screening of The General- a silent film starring Buster Keaton at Mount Vic Flicks, a railway journeys themed dinner at Mount Victoria Manor and "railway" pies and soup at the Victoria and Albert Guesthouse.
There will also be a range of historic displays at the Mount Victoria Museum and a model train display at the recently refurbished Mount Victoria Railway Station.
Trains will be run and provided by Transport Heritage NSW.
