THIS year’s flu vaccine is now available, with more than 4.5 million vulnerable Australians eligible for the free influenza vaccine.
This includes those over 65, who can access two new, specifically targeted vaccines that offer stronger doses.
It comes off the back of last year’s killer flu season, which saw more than 250,000 Australians test positive for influenza and double the normal hospitalisations.
“Last year over 90 per cent of the 1,100 influenza-associated deaths were in people aged 65 years and older and this year we have taken specific action to address this,” said Health Minister Greg Hunt.
Those who are eligible for a free flu shot under the National Immunisation Program include people aged 65 years and over, most Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and those who suffer from chronic conditions.
Flu shots are available now at general practices and other vaccination providers. They’re also available for purchase at many pharmacies.
