Almost 6000 customers of the three providers are set to receive refunds, or will be allowed to exit existing plans without penalty after the companies admitted they had offered speeds they could not provide to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) .
A total of 3384 Dodo customers, 1912 iPrimus customers and 565 M2 Commander customers were unable to achieve the speeds they were paying for, according to the ACCC.
ACCC commissioner Sarah Court said the providers had in all likelihood breached consumer law by "engaging in misleading or deceptive conduct and making false or misleading representations".
"Affected customers may prefer to exit their contract with a refund rather than accept a service that does not meet their needs," she said.
"Dodo, iPrimus and Commander will also be required to tell new customers if they are not getting the maximum speeds advertised to them."
The majority of affected customers were using FTTN technology.
