A Curtin University research team is seeking funding for a public campaign to raise awareness of falls prevention.
Following feedback from older people on three video advertisements, the team plans to make some modifications and trial a bigger campaign.
The videos highlight that falls are preventable, and tell viewers where to find information on healthy ageing activities that are also good for falls prevention.
Anne-Marie Hill from the School of Physiotherapy and Exercise Science said there is a “gap in knowledge” in this area.
“Our focus groups were shocked that more older people are admitted to hospital as a result of a fall rather than a car accident, and the elderly are more likely to die from a fall than a car accident, “ Associate Professor Hill said.
“In WA in 2015, 650 people over the age of 65 were admitted to hospital as a result of a car accident, but 7000 were admitted as a result of a fall. Car accidents caused 40 fatalities a year in that age group, and falls caused 120 fatalities.
“It is a big problem and it is gradually building up as more people move into the over-60 age bracket.
Associate Professor Hill said precautions to help prevent falling include getting your eyes checked in case you need new glasses, wearing better shoes and exercising regularly, as the stronger your legs are the less likely you are to fall.
“We want people to incorporate balance exercises into their lives,” Prof Hill said.
“It can be something as simple as standing on one leg while making a cup of tea.”
It was also important to check for hazards in the home, such as winding up hoses and getting rid of mats.
The team has workshopped the advertisements at a retirement village, men’s sheds and an event in Perth and are keen to have input from more seniors.
