SYDNEY couple Bob and Lea Goss have discovered their new favourite way to travel.
It’s called relocation hire, where vehicle suppliers use agencies to book out their vehicles one way for a much cheaper price.
Bob and Lea used the relocation company Imoova recently to book their 12-day trip across the US for $1 a day.
After working seven days a week, it was the Perth couple’s first overseas trip in a long time and gave them the freedom to visit all the places they’d wanted to go without blowing their budget.
Lea was apprehensive at first but after seeing the nearly new class A RV, she was totally relaxed. “It was like an apartment on wheels,” she said.
Agencies using Imoova allow renters a set number of days to reach the destination. In Australia, for example, you might have six days to deliver a two-berth 4WD from Broome to Perth with an optional two days at added cost.
On longer journeys a contribution towards the cost of fuel is sometimes provided – for example, a recent hire from Cairns to Alice Springs included $250 free fuel against receipts.
Bob and Lea picked up their RV from near Chicago.
While Bob was behind the wheel most of the way, Lea braved the wind and drove across the plains of South Dakota to the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore.
A highlight was the winter wonderland of Spearfish Canyon. From the Black Hills they drove through Wyoming and Colorado to Moab, the adventure capital of Utah, where they enjoyed jet boating and relaxed sunset cruising.
Another highlight was the Navajo Nation reserve and Monument Valley.
The couple has more trips planned with Imoova: one from Adelaide to Hobart with ferry included and another US trip.
