AT THE tender age of 72, Liz Munro decided it was time to do something about having never made her “deb”.
She had been talking with a friend who had not been to a debutante ball either. Nor had others in their Roxburgh Park retirement village. And so a plan was hatched.
It came to fruition recently when 12 couples were presented to the mayor of the City of Hume, Drew Jessop, at a mature age debutante ball.
“One hundred and twenty people attended – it was so much fun,” Liz said.
“We were able to arrange partners for 12 ladies who ranged in age from 60 to nearly 80.
“It’s a great story about positive ageing. We had 13 weeks of dancing practice beforehand, men’s and ladies’ classes – the instructors volunteered their time.
“It was a chance to really dress up and have a big night out.
“The debutantes and partners were presented to the mayor, who was wonderful. It was the first time he’d had deb couples presented to him.”
Following the formalities was an evening of dinner, music and dancing, which topped off what was, for many of the participants, a bucket-list item.
