THE Kokoda Track occupies a special place in the hearts of Australians: but how much do you really know about it?
Field Guide to the Kokoda Track, by amateur historian, businessman and track tour leader Bill James, blends historical fact with oral testimony and the latest mapping technology to provide a comprehensive guide to the Kokoda campaign.
As one of the most significant World War II battles in which we fought the enemy without the support of Allied forces, the campaign is a gripping true story of a group of under-resourced, outgunned young men who displayed immense bravery, endurance, sacrifice and mateship to beat the odds - and defeat a terrifying enemy.
About 3000 trekkers visit the Kokoda Track each year. The field guide, now in its third edition, is a must-have companion for those about to undertake the gruelling trek and those who simply want to understand the story of Kokoda.
It has been released to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the beginning of the Kokoda campaign on July 21.
James has led more than 35 groups on the eight-day trek of the Kokoda Track and has now passed the mantle on to his two sons, who take organisations including school groups on the historic trek.
