QUEENLAND'S Health Minister Cameron Dick is urging people to stop playing Russian roulette with raw eggs and meat.
The warning comes after recent salmonella outbreaks across the state, which saw more than 70 people infected with food-borne bacteria.
"While raw eggs are a great source of protein and are important for a healthy diet, if you eat them raw or undercooked you really are playing Russian roulette with your health," Mr Dick said.
"Salmonella infection in healthy people usually leads to mild gastroenteritis symptoms, but for those with weakened immune systems, it can be deadly if not promptly treated."
Those at greatest risk include the elderly and very young.
More than 5000 cases of salmonella are reported in Queensland alone each year. All of these cases are avoidable through proper food preparation and handling.
This includes avoiding cracked, dirty or unstamped eggs.
