MOTORISTS are being asked to slow down as children get ready to go back to school.
Queensland's students return to school today.
Police Minister Mark Ryan said school zones and reduced speed limits during drop off and pick up times are now operational.
"We are urging motorists to take extra care, slow down and be on the lookout for pedestrians near schools," he said.
"We want to ensure all motorists are prioritising the safety of our children as they travel to and from school whether they are on foot, riding on a bike, in a car or using public transport."
Queensland's students are the first to return to school after the Christmas holidays.
Students in the ACT, Northern Territory, South Australia, Victoria and most parts of NSW return on January 30.
Students in NSW's western division return on February 6 while Western Australian kids return on February 1.
Tasmanian children return on February 8.
