Ernest Sharp’s mind is as sharp as his name.
The 86-year-old has gone back to school to earn a bachelor of criminology and criminal justice from Griffith University through Open Universities Australia (OUA).
Ernest is one of almost 600 students aged 60-plus studying online through OUA.
No matter that he lives in Lane Cove while his university is in Queensland: Ernest has been able to access his degree via distance education thanks to the internet and digital technology.
He decided to go back to study to gain a better understanding about cases involving police persecution.
“I love study because whilst there are many ways and organisations to help you keep your body fit, the road I have taken keeps my mind fit,” he said.
Ernest puts his lessons into practice by regularly delivering jurisprudence lectures and in his role as chairman of a company board for residential developments.
He has enjoyed his education journey so much he would like to progress to become a tutor.
OUA is owned by Curtin University of Technology, Griffith University, Macquarie University, Monash University, RMIT University, Swinburne University of Technology and University of South Australia. It has enrolled more than 250,000 students since 1993.
