Decorated eggs have been exhibited in the Open Art and Craft section of the Royal Adelaide Show for the past 30 years, and 2016 has a record number of entries for the egg decorating awards.
The theme of this year’s competition is fauna and flora.
There are 16 award categories, including diorama, decoupage, intricate cut, mechanical and beading.
The champion egg will be chosen from the category winners. Egg decorating show steward Pam Williams promises this year will be a bumper exhibit.
“We have 55 entries for egg decorating this year which is the most we’ve ever had,” she said.
“As part of the 30-year celebration, we will be having a special display of champion eggs from past years.”
The eggs used for this delicate work are generally goose, duck or turkey eggs, as well as emu or ostrich eggs as these are thicker than ordinary hens’ eggs.
“Some decorators also decorate the tiny finch eggs.”
The eggs are transformed into jewellery boxes or turned into lights and clocks with mechanical or electrical parts added.
They are carved, cut, painted or lined, and some are decorated with tiny rhinestone crystals.
The decorated eggs will be on display in the Art and Craft section in the Duncan Gallery, between the Jubilee and Goyder Pavilions.
