The Queensland government has used the gathering of the International Federation of Ageing in Brisbane this week to announce its first steps to build more age-friendly communities.
But it has some catching up to do.
The World Health Organisations's Dr John Beard used the conference to announce the country's most age-friendly states - and NSW and Victoria are neck and neck foro the honour, each having six regions registered with the Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities.
Age-friendly cities in NSW are Orange, Marrickville, Lane Cove, Liverpool, Kiama and Great Lake.
Victoria's age-friendly communities are Banyule, Cardinia, Macedon Ranges, Boroondara, Maroondah and Warrnambool.
South Australia follows closely with five registered age-friendly communities: Cockburn, Whyalla, Unley, Barunga West and Salisbury.
Western Australia has three registered cities, Tasmania has two and the ACT has one.
No cities in Queensland or the Northern Territory have yet made the global register, which so far stands at 300 member cities in 35 countries.
