LOVE the pure and unadorned sound of a cappella music? If so, get along to Short+Sweet Voices, an exciting cultural event next month that welcomes vocal performers, choirs and conductors to showcase their musical prowess – unaccompanied – in the 10-minute format.
A cappella singing has become amaz ingly popular in recent years, including in schools and universities. Groups of varying levels, from recreational and community-based choirs to fully professional ensembles, are forming all the time – with many singers inspired by vocal-friendly TV shows such as The Sing Off and Glee or Hollywood hit movies like Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2 (starring Australian Rebel Wilson).
Recognising this, Short+Sweet, the biggest short-form performing arts brand in the world, last year added a capella to its festivals, which showcase the best in 10-minute theatre, dance, cabaret and song.
The move proved a great success, with more than a dozen choirs ranging in size from quartets to ensembles numbering more than 100 contesting the final, which was won by Erina’s Coastal Acappella.
Heats for this year’s event begin on April 4 at various venues, with the final to take place at Chatswood’s Concourse performing arts centre on April 15.
Registrations close on March 18.
On April 3, Sydney Street Choir and the School of Hard Knocks founder Jonathon Welch will be guest artist at the inaugural workshop from 10am-5pm.
