The 76-year-old completed his fourth MACA Ride to Conquer Cancer in late October, helping to raise funds for cancer research at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.
This year he was the oldest competitor in the 200km two-day ride through the Western Australian countryside. Percy has been part of the event every year and has already signed up to ride next year.
He said he wanted to challenge himself for a good cause. “I also want to encourage other senior Western Australians to participate in events like this. “All anyone needs, regardless of their age, is motivation, a bike and a helmet.”
Percy was one of 1032 riders who helped raise $4.5million ahead of this year’s ride. In the past four years, the ride has raised more than $19.5 million.
“One in two Australian men and one in three Australian women will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85,” said institute director Peter Leedman.
“The Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research is on a mission to improve the health of Western Australians through cutting-edge research that translates into new ways to prevent and treat disease.”
Funds raised through the ride assist doctors, researchers and scientists, and go towards providing state-of-the-art equipment.
