The survey will take place from September 27 to October 24 with locals asked to observe birds in parks, backyards and balconies across the city.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the survey was a great way to encourage the community to take time out and connect with nature.
"This is a great opportunity for Sydneysiders to better understand the city's amazing bird life and be aware we need to preserve their habitats," the Lord Mayor said.
"We share our city with around 70 different species of birds and have recently had reports of powerful owl sightings in Newtown, kingfishers in Sydney Park and brush turkeys in the heart of the city.
"Office workers could spend 20 minutes during their lunch break and apartment dwellers are invited to observe bird life from their balconies.
"We're encouraging everyone to assist us in gathering important data so we can continue to monitor and maintain our city's wonderful array of feathered-friends."
Survey results can be logged onto a simple form from a tablet or phone, or downloaded and printed off at: cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/live/animals/wildlife/local-wildlife-watch
A number of events will be held throughout the month as part of the survey with watching kits available.
