Organisers hoping to win south-east Queensland’s bid for the 2028 Olympics could learn a thing or two from Wynnum 60 & Better program’s Mock Olympics.
The event is back by popular demand as part of Queensland Seniors Week celebrations from August 15-23. It will take place around Bayside Sea Scouts Hall at Manly on August 20 from 10am.
“It’s madcap, it’s absurd and everyone loves it,” said Wynnum 60 & Better program manager Colleen Frith.
Last year, about 80 competitors vied for gold in events including skittles, croquet, pancake throwing races and a relay keeping a Lifesaver lolly balanced on a straw.
Tutus, sombreros, bright colours and cheery attitudes will be the order of the day, which finishes with a sausage sizzle about 1pm.
Registration for the Mock Olympics is essential by phoning 3348-6306.
THE Seniors Week calendar features some 300 registered events, 115 which receive state government subsidies. While physical activity events are always popular – from Zumba dancing to boot throwing at Barcaldine – the week is a full celebration of life well lived complete with music, food, craft, gardening, mystery bus trips and movie sessions.
