SOMETHING is really catching on in the north-east town of Bright – but, really, it’s not that new.
As well as taking in the beautiful colour of the trees and picturesque surrounds, visitors to the town often take up the local croquet club’s offer of a game. And, yes, it’s catching on.
Bright Croquet Club is the second-oldest club in Victoria, formed in 1904 by gold miners’ wives who were refused entry into the town’s bowling club.
The courts today resemble an English village green – a far cry from the early days when the ladies of Bright, in their long dresses and bonnets, played on what was also used as the local tennis court.
Visitors are welcome to call in and give the game a try.
It’s guaranteed to give the brain a workout like chess; there’s the acuteness of playing snooker; and gentle exercise like a stroll around a golf course (but a lot shorter).
If you’re completely new to the game, a member will be your buddy, take you around the 12 hoops and explain what’s what in the game started in Ireland in the 10th century.
