Why is it that many people don’t feel it necessary to have a will?
Some believe the inheritance process is simple, but it’s not necessarily the case.
The legalities involved with inheritance and funerals for those without a will are complicated and can be painful for family members and loved ones left behind.
The timely distribution of estate assets can be greatly delayed when no will exists. In the worst case, if you don’t have close family the government can end up receiving your assets.
This can mean solicitors spend time – and money – clarifying finer points once you have died. You can avoid this by thinking about what you’d like to give people when you’re no longer around.
Talk to a solicitor who will help you to clearly understand the different parts of the will, storing your will securely in a place known and accessible to your executors.
They can also explain the importance of having powers of attorney.
For years the Salvation Army Wills and Bequests Department has conducted Community Wills Days at Salvos churches and centres around Australia.
Solicitors donate their time to the Salvos for this community service.
For $70 you can sit with a solicitor and give them your simple will instructions, or have your will updated – couples $120. Wills Days are held at different places/dates during the year.
