OLDER people are embracing online banking, according to new research.
New data from the Commonwealth Bank shows one in four customers over 65 are banking digitally using Netbank or the CommBank app. It's a 41 per cent increase over the last two years.
The data also shows 50 per cent of customers over 65 are also using ATMs.
Commonwealth Bank general manager of retail sales strategy and projects Anna Mankiewicz said it showed customers were shifting away over-the-counter transactions.
"What we find in our everyday interactions with older customers is that, when it comes to keeping up with the fast evolution of technology, it is confidence they lack, and not capacity," Ms Mankiewicz said.
"As one of Australia's largest customer-facing institutions with a big branch network, our teams have a role to play in guiding and supporting older consumers to keep up with technology, so they can maintain their independence when managing their finances and have the ability to bank with us when it is convenient for them, not just during branch operating hours."
The bank is also helping older customers through its involvement in the Tech Savvy Seniors program with the NSW Government and Telstra.
It developed the online banking module for the program which teaches seniors how to navigate online banking screens, view statements and transfer money between accounts as well as other online banking tasks.
