IT MAY only take two to tango, but nothing beats a full house. Just ask Bernard Walz.
The Good Old Days series, which presents four to five affordable concerts for seniors each year at Sydney Town Hall, has become the hottest ticket in town for older music lovers.
The series ushers in a new program with its first show of 2018, From Broadway to Hollywood, on February 5.
It will feature rising musical theatre stars Michael Cormick and Claire Lyon and include hits from some of Broadway and Hollywood’s most famous musicals.
Bernard has served as producer and conductor of the show since its creator, Roy Waterson, died in 2013. Roy had presented the series under its original name Nostalgia Productions, for 30 years.
Bernard said the series was the only event in Sydney providing year-round opportunities for seniors to see top talent at affordable prices.
“In this day and age, many seniors and members of the retired community are on fixed incomes and don’t have the freedom to go see concerts at the Opera House and other major venues because of the prices,” he said.
He said seniors showed as much enthusiasm for the concerts as might excited teens attending a One Direction concert.
“When you come to one of these concerts, there’s always a fantastic energy in the room,” he said.
“Almost all our performers comment on it and that energy comes directly from the audience.
“People usually start lining up outside the Town Hall at 9am waiting to get in.”
The shows will take place at 11am and 2pm, with David Parsons performing a half hour of organ music before each.
Reserved seating is available from $40.
