It's better to stay indoors than by the pool during a heatwave.
WITH NSW readying itself for another day of scorching heat today, here are a few tips from the Health Department to help older people get through the day.
- Keep curtains and blinds closed to reduce excess heat.
- Make sure your cooling systems are working.
- Ensure you take in small amounts of fluids regularly rather than large amounts of fluids less frequently.
- Remember there are alternative sources of fluids such as jelly, ice-cream or fruit juice blocks.
- Steer clear of alcoholic or caffeinated beverages.
- Eat frequent, small meals.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing, use sunscreen if venturing outside, and keep skin covered when exposed to direct sunlight. Seek shade when outside.
- Avoid going outdoors between 11am and 3pm.
- Be aware of signs of heat stress, including nausea, red, pale or severely dry skin.
- Check that any elderly or infirm neighbours are prepared for the day, have water in the refrigerator, and understand how to stay hydrated.
