DAPPER English art collaborators Gilbert & George are presenting their first Australasian retrospective exhibition at MONA until the end of March.
Gilbert & George are Gilbert Prousch, 72, and George Passmore, 73, who create graphic photo-based artworks.
The pair met at a London art school in 1967 and have been collaborating on anti-elitist works ever since, using the words “Art For All” as their slogan.
Almost 100 of their pictures from 1970 to 2014 showing their take on the modern world are featured in the MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) exhibition, along with a sold out In Conversation event.
“Our pictures deal with the great universals: death, hope, life, fear, sex, money, race and religion,” Gilbert & George said.
“This is your very first – and last – chance to see 100 of our pictures.”
Writer Michael Bracewell described Gilbert & George as working as one artist to produce images that have attracted attention from around the world.
“Gilbert & George have worked without pause to make an art that conveys, at the most visceral level, the stark experience of being alive in the modern world.” he said.
“In this endeavour, they are concerned with the common denominators of the human condition: with the emotions, physiology, beliefs, economies and truths that apply to everyone.”
MONA’s exhibition co-directors Nicole Durling and Olivier Varenne are curating the exhibition, which runs until March 28.
Entry is free for Tasmanian residents. MONA is open 10am-5pm Wednesday to Monday at 655 Main Rd, Berriedale.
