PENNY farthings might look odd but these alternative bikes have a host of fans who flood Evandale each February for the National Penny Farthing Championships.
This year’s event – the 36th – will be held during the Evandale Village Fair on February 24, with the final event, the Clarendon Road Race, staged the next day,
About 20 riders will vie for the top spot in the 32km Clarendon ride.
Starting at the Prince of Wales Hotel at Evandale and finishing at the National Trust estate Clarendon, the race is one of endurance rather than speed.
Defending National Penny Farthing champion Darren Singline is expected to be one of the main contenders.
The Launceston bicycle mechanic has competed in the longer race four times previously and said it was always harder the following day after the championships.
